Newsletter Update: I’m considering reducing the frequency of our newsletter. While daily tips are great for some, they’re overwhelming for others, and I want to strike the right balance. Reducing the frequency would also give me the opportunity to curate the absolute best information for you. Of course, I’d love your feedback. Let me know what you think about the frequency, and I’ll update the cadence, by Wednesday, based on your preferences. Thanks for your input!

Daily Longevity Tip: Top 10 Poisons to Avoid for a Healthier Life

Tip Summary: We explore the top 10 dog poisons, and learn why keeping activated charcoal and hydrogen peroxide at home can be crucial in an emergency.

Hey Dog Longevity friends! As we’ve discussed in the past, there are two parts to longevity; life prolongation and injury prevention. One of the fastest ways to shorten our dogs’ lives is through accidental poisoning. Let’s look at the top 10 substances that are poisonous to dogs, why they’re toxic, helpful chemicals to have on hand, and the implications for longevity.

Top 10 Dog Poisons:

  1. Over-the-Counter Medications: Includes acetaminophen, ibuprofen, and herbal products. Can cause liver, kidney damage, and more.

  2. People Food: Foods like onions, garlic, alcohol, avocado, macadamia nuts, grapes, raisins, and products with xylitol are toxic to dogs.

  3. Prescription Medications for People: Can cause stomach ulcers, kidney failure, and serotonin syndrome in dogs.

  4. Chocolate: Contains methylxanthines, which can cause vomiting and, in larger doses, death.

  5. Plants: Azaleas, rhododendrons, tulips, daffodils, and sago palms can cause serious health issues.

  6. Household Products: Cleaners, antifreeze, and paint thinners can cause stomach upset, depression, and even death.

  7. Veterinary Products: Painkillers, de-wormers, and flea/tick treatments can be harmful if misused.

  8. Rodenticides: Baits for rodents can be tempting and toxic to dogs.

  9. Insecticides: Bug sprays and ant baits are as dangerous to dogs as they are to the insects.

  10. Lawn and Garden Products: Some products can be poisonous if ingested by pets.

Chemicals to Keep on Hand:

  • Activated Charcoal: Helps absorb toxins in the stomach.

  • Hydrogen Peroxide: Induces vomiting to expel ingested poisons (use only under veterinary guidance).

Impact on Longevity: Preventing exposure to these poisons can drastically reduce the risk of acute health crises in dogs, many of which can have long-term health effects or be fatal. By avoiding these substances, you can help maintain your dog's health, reduce the risk of chronic diseases, and potentially extend their lifespan.
