Non-Pharmaceutical Arthritis Support

Newsletter Update / Poll Results: Thank you so much for your poll responses, emails, and direct messages. Prior to doing the poll, I thought that I’d reduce the frequency down to once or twice per week, but I had multiple people reach out and say that they enjoyed the more frequent content. That said, I’ll try and strike a balance right in the middle, and switch to 3x weekly + the weekly rollup. I’ll start next week and see how it goes, but I think it will help me to select the best possible content. Thanks again for your feedback. It’s my honor to serve you and a privilege to have you as a reader.

Daily Longevity Tip: Non-Pharmaceutical Support for Arthritis

Tip Summary: We explore various non-drug therapies to support dogs with arthritis and their impact on longevity.

Hey Dog Longevity friends! Arthritis is a common issue in dogs, especially as they age. Managing it effectively can greatly enhance their quality of life and longevity. Many dog parents, including myself, often prefer to try and treat conditions with non-pharmaceutical therapies, so let’s look at some of those options today. We’ll cover therapy options, supplement options, and then the impact on longevity:

Therapeutic Options for Arthritis:

  1. Photobiomodulation (Therapeutic Laser): This therapy aids in pain relief by releasing serotonin and endorphins and blocking pain signals. Studies support its effectiveness in reducing pain and medication requirements in dogs with arthritis.

  2. Pulsed Electromagnetic Field Therapy (PEMF): Used for bone and soft-tissue healing, reducing inflammation, and pain management. While its direct evidence in managing arthritis is limited, PEMF shows potential benefits.

  3. Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy (ESWT): Applies high-energy sound waves transcutaneously to reduce pain and improve symptoms of chronic conditions like arthritis.

  4. Intra-Articular Injections: Recommended when noninvasive therapies are insufficient. Options include platelet-rich plasma, stem cell therapy, hyaluronic acid, steroids, and conversion electron therapy.

Joint Support Supplements:

  1. Polysulfated Glycosaminoglycan (PSGAG): FDA-approved for managing canine osteoarthritis, it inhibits enzymes that degrade articular cartilage, reducing pain and lameness.

  2. Oral Joint Supplements: Efficacy varies, but studies show benefits from Omega-3 enriched diets and supplements. Collagen shows weak efficacy, while glucosamine and chondroitin have limited support for pain management.

Impact on Longevity: Effective management of arthritis in dogs through these nonpharmacologic methods can significantly improve their quality of life. By reducing pain and inflammation, maintaining joint health, and supporting mobility, these therapies contribute to a longer, happier life for dogs suffering from osteoarthritis.
