Daily Longevity Tip: Daily Routines and Longevity

Tip Summary: A predictable schedule helps prevent boredom-related behavioral issues and stress, contributing to a happier, healthier, and potentially longer life for our dogs.

Hey Dog Longevity friends! Do you ever feel like you crave routine and predictability? Maybe it’s just my age (34), but I’ve felt the calling for a reliable and dependable routine now more than ever. Aside from the emotional aspect of having comfort in life, I also believe that it has scientific roots in contributing to a healthier and happier life, for both humans and dogs alike. It turns out veterinarians agree, and that’s because it helps reduce anxiety, cortisol levels, and stress, which can all lead to more serious complications. Let’s look at an ideal routine (according to veterinarians), along with how daily routines can influence longevity:

Veterinarian Recommended Routine:

  1. Morning and Evening Meals: Feed your dog twice a day, about 12 hours apart. Allocate time for bathroom breaks post meals to avoid accidents.

  2. Consistent Exercise: Aim for 30 to 45 minutes of exercise daily. This can vary depending on your dog’s breed, age, and health. Remember, mental stimulation is as important as physical activity.

  3. Adequate Sleep: Dogs need about 12 to 14 hours of sleep per day. Puppies and older dogs may require more.

  4. Managing Alone Time: Practice leaving your dog alone for periods, especially if working from home, to avoid separation anxiety.

  5. Meal Considerations: Avoid exercising your dog immediately before or after meals, particularly for large breeds prone to bloat. Adjust feeding frequency based on your dog’s age, health, and activity level.

  6. Quality Time: Spend time daily on activities like playing and training, which foster bonding and mental stimulation.

Impact on Longevity: A predictable daily routine not only minimizes stress and boredom in dogs but also promotes physical health and emotional stability. By meeting their basic needs consistently, you help prevent behavior problems and health issues, potentially extending their lifespan and improving their quality of life.
